Planning a fishing trip in Cancun is an exciting adventure, but it’s important to know what your day will look like to make sure you’re prepared for the experience. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect on a typical day with a Cancun fishing charter, from departure to wrapping up your trip.

Morning Departure and Arrival at the Marina

Your day starts with a morning departure from your hotel, either by taxi or pre-arranged transport with the charter company. Once you arrive at the marina, a representative or the captain will greet you.

You’ll be asked to settle any remaining balance for the trip before boarding the boat. Once aboard, you’ll meet the captain and crew, and you’ll have the opportunity to talk with the captain about the plan for the day. This plan is based on the previous day’s fishing report, current sea conditions, and the duration of your trip. The captain will help determine the best fish to target and the techniques to use.

If you have a specific fishing style in mind—like trolling, live baiting, or bottom fishing—let the captain know, and the crew will do their best to cater to your preferences.

Catching Live Bait

Once you’re comfortable with the crew and plan, the first stop will be a shallow area to troll for baitfish like hardtail or blue runners. Using a sabiki rig, you’ll help gather live bait to use for the day. Sometimes, catching enough bait can take just a few minutes, or it could take up to an hour, depending on conditions. It’s worth the effort to have live bait as part of your fishing strategy once you head offshore.

Heading to the Deeper Waters

After collecting bait, you’ll make your way to deeper waters where you’ll begin the real fishing adventure. Based on what you’re targeting and the conditions of the day, you’ll get to experience various fishing techniques like trolling, live baiting, drifting, bottom fishing, or jigging. The crew will assist with everything, and the captain will make recommendations based on what’s biting.

Choppy Seas and Seasickness

It’s important to note that ocean conditions are beyond anyone’s control, and sometimes the seas can be choppy. We do our best to inform clients about the weather and sea conditions ahead of time. If you’re prone to seasickness or this is your first time fishing offshore, it’s highly recommended to take seasick medication before departure.

Remember, if the seas are rough and you experience seasickness, the trip will continue unless the captain deems it unsafe. If you choose to return early due to seasickness, no refunds will be provided, so be sure to take preventative measures if you’re concerned.

Wrapping Up Your Trip

After a thrilling day of fishing, you’ll return to the marina. Once there, you can decide what to do with your catch:

  • Share it with the crew: The crew always appreciates taking home fresh fish for their families.
  • Have it prepared at the marina: Many local restaurants at the dock offer to cook your catch so you can enjoy it fresh from the sea.
  • Take it home: If you want to bring your fish home, come prepared with a cooler, as we don’t assist with packing or shipping your fish.

Final Notes and Tipping

After enjoying your meal or packaging your fish, your fishing adventure comes to an end. As you head back to your hotel, you’ll be leaving with incredible memories from a day on the water.

One final note: while tipping is optional, it’s customary to tip the captain and crew if they’ve done a good job. A 20% tip is considered standard for excellent service, but you can tip whatever amount you feel is appropriate.
